Abstract     Stressful life events and personality characteristics are involved in the development of psychosomatic disease. The aim of this study was to determine wheter periodontal disease is in any way related to the strategies of coping with stress and the style of defensive behaviour used by the patient. The results suggest that subjects with healthy periodontal tissues tend to cope with stress in an active way, largely by seeking social support. Subjects with advanced periodontal disease use a more passive strategy, characterized by the avoidance of problems. The persons exhibit a sensitive style of defensive behaviour directed towards inner control. They are emotionally less stable and more susceptible to stressors than subjects with healthy periodontal tissues.
