Abstract     Premalignant changes are those from which a malignant lesion is more likely to arise than from normal tissue. The term "premalignant" does not imply that a malignant lesion is bound to appear; many patients with this type of changes never develop malignant disease. Premalignant lesions in the oral cavity include: lichen planus, chronic candidiasis, leukoplakia and erythroplasia. Treatment is based on the identification of etiological factors, careful physical examination of the oral cavity and biopsy of the lesion. A combination of active measures and passive observation is applied in most cases.
