Abstract     Obesity is linked to increased morbidity and mortality. In addition to body mass index measuring of waist circumfernece is essential for the identification of individuals who are at high risk for metabolic and cardiovascular diseases that are leading causes of mortality in this population. Waist circumference is an appropriate clinical assessement of most harmful visceral adiposity. Characteristics of visceral adipose tissue such as adipocyte size and number, lipolytic responsivness, lipid storage capacity and inflammatory cytokine production are significant correlates and determinats of the increased cardiometabolic risk. Lifestyle intervention leading to weight loss generally induce preferential mobilization of visceral fat. Some pharmacological interventions and bariatric surgery have been shown to reduce body weight and favorably modulate body fat distribution.
