Abstract     Five different soil types for extraction of fulvic acids (FA) have been chosen and classified. FA were isolated by alkali-extraction and purified by ultrafiltration (UF). Afterwards their COOH content, elemental and microelemental composition were determined. Average molecular weight was determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). From these data no significant differences in compositions could be identified. Characterization by IR spectrascopy revealed no differences between the five isolated FA. On the basis of IR spectra the FA were classified as type II humic substances, characteristic for soil fulvic acids.
