Abstract     Aluminium, the third most abundant element in the earth's crust, is recognised as a neurotoxic agent. The properties of aluminium compounds and its alloys triggered their massive industrial applications. Aluminium bioavailability is increasing due to anthropological activities that include formation of aqueous soluble aluminium compounds. A body of evidence has established that the adverse effects of aluminium promote neurodegeneration in humans. Neurodegenerative diseases elevate morbidity and mortality, particularly in the elderly. There are many mechanisms of aluminium neurotoxicity, but it appears that they critically interfere with the main steps of neurotransmission at central nervous system synapses. To what extent aluminium induced effects on neurotransmission contribute to neuropathy, is the aim to be addressed in this chapter.
