Abstract     The birth rate and infant mortality rate in two neighbouring regions of eastern Slovenia with different socio-economic conditions before, during and after World War I. showed a higher birth rate and lower infant mortality rate (27.3 promile to 35.2 promile) in the economically less favourable region in Haloze compared with the region of Ptujsko polje. This is attributed to greater tolerance toward unmarried mothers, more prolonged mother - baby contact and more consistent breast feeding. The critical decline in the birth rate in Slovenia during the last decades should urgently stimulate paediatricians to encourage pregnancy and responsible parenthood together with highly humanized relationship between the sexes among young people.
