Abstract     Successful parental bonding to newborn babies is crucial for normal growth and development of their children. In last 30 years newborn nurseries and intensive care departments that were strictly isolated, opened their doors for visiting parents, siblings and for rooming-in. Despite this there remains small part of newborn population who has to be transferred to remote referral centers because of medical indications. Transport in utero has in last years only partially alleviated this problem. Neonatal special care department of Pediatric hospital in Ljubljana opened for visiting parents and siblings in 1973. With transferred premature and sick newborn babies we have been hospitalizing also their mothers. In last 10 years we have hospitalized on average 241 mothers and 333 newborn babies per year, almost two thirds together with mothers. Present serious deficiency in nursing teams could be ameliorated by appropriately guided and supervised maternal help in the care of premature and sick newborn babies.
