Abstract     The paper delineates the essential clinical characteristics of anorexia nervosa according to DSM III R. It emphasises the multifactorial - bio-psycho-social causality, with no single basic cause having been found to account for all cases of this still very enigmatic syndrome. This eating disorder can occur practically at any age. All that the patients have in common is their belief believe that through starvation they have found the way to cope with problems, stess and anxiety. Special attention is given to early-onset anorexia nervosa, usually occuring before menarche, and to recent findings in the biological, psychological and social fields. The paper presents the multimodal therapy model, which is used at the Department of Paediatrics in Ljubljana.
