Abstract     Endometrial cancer is the most common female gynecological malignancy, with the vast majority of cases arising in women after menopause and with lower incidence in premenopausal women. Development of endometrial cancer is usually explained with the unopposed estrogen hypothesis, which proposes that exposure to estrogens that is not opposed by progestagens stimulates proliferation of endometrium and increases DNA replication errors. This may lead to endometrial hyperplasia and cancer. Studies from the last years suggest that also androgens are implicated. Epidemiological data show associations between the increased serum levels of androgens and increased risk of endometrial cancer, although studies on cell lines and cancerous tissue reveal their protective role. The role of androgens in the development of endometrial cancer has not yet been fully elucidated. further studies are needed to better understand the mechanisms and role of androgens in the developement and progression of endometrial cancer that could lead to identification of potential novel treatment of this disease.
