Abstract     By 31th December 1993, a total of 109.858 AIDS cases had been reported in Europe, with 31 cases in Slovenia. More than half of all reported cases have died. Adolescents currently comprise only a small percentage of all reported AIDS cases. Because of the latent period of several years to more than a decade between HIV infection and clinical symptoms of AIDS, some of these adults with AIDS probably became infected during adolescence. A survey or the cumulative AIDS incidence rate was carried out in Slovenia. Patients with AIDS or HIV positive were compared with other European countries in terms of exposure and epidemiological characteristics. Differences in the prevalence of HIV infection between countries are similar to those observed for the AIDS cases: higher prevalence in large cities, among IUDs (particulary in Italy) and among homo-bisexual males; among heterosexual subjects the prevalence was higher in patients originating from subsaharian Africa. The majority of AIDS cases between 25 and 49 years old.
