Abstract     The shape of urinary red blood cells is of diagnostic significance in topical determination of origin of haematuria. 80 pct of eritrocytes changed in shape signify glomerulopathy. A phase-contrast microscope was used for the control investigation of urine samples of 100 children in which percutaneous kidney biopsy had been done between 1981 and 1988 due to unclear glomerulopathy. The cells of those who still had haematuria at the time of the control were defined morphologically according to criteria by Fairley and Birch. Only in the group of children having MPGN with dense membrane deposits 100 pct dysmorphism was established. The results obtained from the group with IgA-IgG nephopathy were the most heterogenous since 26-100 pct changes erytrocytes were found in urine. Although the shape of erythrocytes in urine is diagnostic aid, the final decision must take clinical symptoms as well as biochemical parameters into consideration. However, kidney biopsy is diagnostically decisive.
