Abstract     The yearly incidence of terminal renal failure in children is 1.5 to 3 per million. With a proper medication-diet regimen, the development of chronic progressive kidney disease can slow down significantly. Haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are considered temporary methods of treatment to be used only until a successful renal transplantation could be performed. The growth rate is not satisfactory after either of the methods, slowly progressing osteopathy being yet another disabling factor. The use of erythropoietin as well as experimental use of growth hormone give hope for greater success of dialysis methods. Renal transplantation, both from a live or a dead donor, is the most successful method of treating terminal renal failure in children. It should be performed as soon as possible. Modern immunosuppressive treatment with minimal toxiticy makes it possible for most of the uremic complications to be mended.
