Abstract     This article reviews the conservative treatment of acute renal failure (ARF) and the various methods of dialysis. The patients treated between 1974 (when the first peritoneal dialysis in the intensive care unit was performed) and the end of 1993 are presented. The diagnosis made in the group of babies (age 0-12 months) with ARF was shock (of various origins) with hypotension in approx. 80 pct of cases. ARF after open heart surgery (approx. 25 pct of cases) was the most frequent diagnosis in the group of older children (age 1-12 years). In the year 1993 nine patients with multiple organ system failure (MOSF) needed dialyses (eight peritoneal dialysis and one continous venovenous haemofiltration). The indications, the complications and the outcome of the eight patients with peritoneal dialysis are analysed. All the patients with two organ system failure survived, those with three ore more organ system failure did not survive. Although in some of them the renal function became normal, they died because of other complications of the illness.
