Abstract     The aim of the study was to establish the differences between some Doppler sonographic parameters of carotid haemodynamics in hypertensive and normotensive children and adolescents (schoolchildren). The hypertensive group was made up of 30 apparently healthy normotensive schoolchildren who were matched with the hypertensive group for age. A 4 MHz continuous-wave Doppler device (Vasoscan VL) was used. By scanning the right and the left common carotid artery (CCA) in each schoolchild the following parameters were obtained: 1. peak systolic frequency, the measure for peak systolic blood flow velocity; 2. end diastolic frequency, the measure for end diastolic blood flow velocity; 3. resistive index, the measure for vascular resistance. The schoolchildren with essential hypertension in this study show statistically significantly higher values of peak systolic (p less th. 0.001) and end diastolic (p less th. 0.02) blood flow velocity in both CCA than normotensive schoolchildren do. On the contrary, the two groups of schoolchildren do not differ in regard to vascular resistance in both CCA (p less th. 0.05). Doppler sonography of extracranial and intracranial arteries in hypertensive children and adolescents can throw more light on pathophysiological mechanisms of cerebral haemodynamics in essential hypertension.
