Abstract     The author presents an overview of the aetiology, epidemiology and clinical and laboratory characteristics of urinary tract infections (UTI). He discusses the method of urine collection, microscopy and bacteriology as well as urine concentrating capacity. Among other laboratory findings he reports on the tubular functional changes measured in patients. Urine osmolality and conductivity obtained from DDAVP test, urine betaglucuronidase, beta2-microglobulin were investigated in their unit. These proximal and distal tubular functions were significantly reduced compared to the controls. Diagnostic imaging should follow local sequence starting with ultrasonography. One of the major aetiological factors is reflux nephropathy, which should be diagnosed by micturating cysto-urethrography. Reflux can be treated by surgery or with prophylactic antibiotics.
