Abstract | During the 11-year period from January 1983 to December 1993, malformations of the urinary tract were suspected in 166 fetuses and confirmed after their birth. Boys dominated (72 pct) as well as unilateral malformations (66 pct). Uretropelvic obstruction was the most frequent diagnosis and was present in 74 infants (45 pct). Seventy three infants (44 pct) required surgical interventions. A total number of 124 operations was necessary; 68 pct of temporary diversions and 32 pct of definitive corrections were performed during the first month of life. Malformations recognized by prenatal diagnosis were compared to 109 malformations detected after urinary infection in infancy. Seventy four percent of urinary obstructions, 90 pct of multicystic dysplastic kidney, but just 20 pct of vesicouteral refluxes were detected by prenatal diagnosis. In general, 56 pct of all early recognized malformations were found by prenatal diagnosis. The data show the value of prenatal ultrasound screening but the number of malformations detected after urinary infections still is high. | |
