Abstract     We were interested in prevalence of structural urinary tract abnormalities (UTA) in children treated for urinary tract infections (UTI). From 1989 to 1993 (five years) we investigated 246 children hospitalized for UTI at the Paediatric Department of Celje General Hospital. There were 202 girls and 44 boys between 5 days and 15 years. All of them underwent songraphy and voiding cystourethrography, and if necessary, intravenous pyelography, cystoscopy or scintigraphy. UTA were found in 75 children (30.4 pct.), mostly vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) - in 49 children (20 pct.), less comon were dysplastic or absent kidney - in 9 children (3.6 pct.), duplex system in 8 children (3.2 pct.), hydronephrosis in 6 children (2.4 pct.) and malrotated kidney in 3 children (1.2 pct.). Girls suffer from UTI more often than boys, but boys have UTA more often than girls. 45 pct. boys and 27 pct. girls with UTI have UTA. As UTA are a risk factor for developing chronic renal disease, their early detection and adequate treatment is reasonable in order to prevent chronic nephropathy.
