Abstract     The authors report on iatrogenic lesions of bile duct injuries occurred in Teaching Hospital Maribor which were followed up in two periods: in a prospective study between 1980-1989 and between 1990-1994. In the first period (1980-1989) 6646 open cholecystectomies were done (1927 men, 4179 women, average 52.6 years, range 14-91). In the second period 2646 (982 men, 1693 women, average 47.5, range 16-84) open cholecystectomies and 235 laparoscopic (starting year 1992) procedures were performed. In the first period 8 iatrogenic bile duct injuries occurred (1 injury on 830 operations - 0.12 percent). There were no iatrogenic injuries in second period. It is concluded that prospective follow up of iatrogenic bile duct injuries may improve the quality of surgeons work and could decrease the incidence of iatrogenic bile duct injuries.
