Abstract     Multiple reviews of the subject of preoperative evaluation have been published within recent years (1,2,3), and various methods have been recommended for the identification of patients who are at increased risk of perioperative and postoperative complications. Three years ago we published a study on predicting the risk of respiratory complications (4). We used a special form for assessing the patient's pulmonary risk, which was developed at the University Medical Centre Ljubljana. The same form was employed in our present study. It has proved a useful screening tool, which enables us to institute perioperative measures designed to reduce the danger of pulmonary complications.
