Abstract     Background. Washing bedpans and urinals by hand is tiring, unfriendly and also dangerous for the staff because of the possibility of infection with fecal microorganisms. The establishment Elektromedicina (EM) in Ljubljana has therefore constructed the prototype of a washing machine with thermal disinfection BLATEX PD-1N (BL). In this investigation we wanted to evaluate its expected efficiency of soil removal and its microbicidal activity. Methods. Physical efficiency of the prototype washer/disinfector BL was evaluated by observing the degree of removal of artificial soil from the bedpans after the washing-thermal disinfection procedure. The microbicidal activity was investigated by mixing the reference strain bioindicator Enterococcus faecium ATCC 6057(EF) to the artificial soil. As carriers of the bioindicator stainless steel plates, screws and bedpans were used and investigated after the thermodisinfection in the BL. The logarithmic reduction of the EF colony forming units (CFU) was observed. Results. The logaritmic reduction of EF CFU in the artificial soil was calculated. In 28 separate experiments with 208 carriers the prescribed reduction of more than LOG5-8CFU, was reached. Conclusion. The thermodisinfector BL fulfils the prescriptions of the DGHM (Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Hygiene und Mikrobiologie), which we used as a guide in the developmental research of the washing machine BL for washing and disinfection of bedpans and urinals. We believe that BL could be recommended for use in clinical settings.
Summary     Izhodišča. Točno pomivanje nočnih posod (NP) in urinskih steklenic (US) je obremenjujoče in neprijetno za osebje ter nevarno zaradi možnosti okužbe s fekalnimi mikroorganizmi. Podjetje Elektromedicina (EM) iz Ljubljana je zato izdelalo prototip pomivalnega stroja z razkuževanjem s toploto BLATEX PD-1N (BL), ki smo ga v tej raziskavi želeli ovrednotiti glede na pričakovano uspešno odstranjevanje nesnage in mikrobicidno delovanje. Metode. Fizikalno odstranjevanje nesnage smo preizkušali z nanašanjem umetne umazanije (UU) na površine NP in opazovali morebitne zaostanke UU po strojnem pomivanju in razkuževanju. Za ugotavljanje mikrobicidnega učinka smo v umazanijo zamešali referenčno bakterijo-bioindikator Enterococcus faecium ATCC 6057 (EF). Kot nosilce bioindikatorja smo uporabili ploščice, vijake in NP iz nerjavnega jekla, ki smo jih vlagali v BL. Opazovali smo logaritemsko redukcijo števila enot EE, ki tvorijo bakterijske kolonije (EBK). Rezultati. V 28 med seboj neodvisnih preizkusih z 208 uporabljenimi nosilci je po pranju in razkuževanju v stroju BL prišlo do predpisanega fizikalnega odstranjevanja nesnage ter do zmanjšanja EBK bakterije EF na nosilcih v vrednosti več kot log 5EBK, praviloma manj kot 6-8 log. Zaključek. Stroj BL ustreza zahtevam DGHM (Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Hygiene und Mikrobiologie), ki so nam bile vodilo pri razvojni raziskavi pomivalnega stroja BL za pomivanje NP in US. Menimo, da ga je mogoče priporočiti za uporabo v kliničnem okolju.
