Abstract     Ectopic pregnancy (EP) is a rare complication in pregnancy as it presents only 1,4 percent of all the pregnancies. In the past two decades the EP incidence in developed countries has increased. In spite of the development of medical methods and equipment, which allow an early diagnosing of pregnancy, EP remains an important cause for maternal mortality in first trimenon and for irreversible sterility. In Slovenia, the EP incidence has been decreasing in the last few years, while maternal mortality owing to EP remains unchanged. We estimate that the decrease in EP incidence is not real. The data about EP are collected in Information system of fetal dealth (ISFD). All the EP should register into this system but a decline of the number of registered EP has been observed. Paralelly with the registering into ISFD we can notice the diagnoses of EP in hospital information system "In-patient statistical record" (Bolniško-statistični list) where - according to the agreement - fetal deaths are not to be registered. Information systems can not be linked, therefore we doubt about the real value of EP incidende calculated from the data collected in such a way. Data collected according to the principle of event registering can not serve for the calculating of EP incidence in the population of reproductive women and for the investigation of causality of EP occurence. For a more detailed control of the phenomenon, the system of data collecting should improve. Such an improved system would enable the calculation of real incidences, ensure the investigation of causality of EP occurence in r eproductive women population, enable the choice of adequate cases and controls in further epidemiologic and clinical investigations and enable the elaboration and implementation of preventive measures for reducing the risk factors resp. increasing the protective factors.
