Abstract     Starting points. Intrauterine growth retardation is followed by the birth of a small-for-date infant i.e. low birth weight infant regarding his or her gestational age. Intrauterine growth retardation is accompanied by high perinatal morbidity and mortality. It is therefore important to know the factors, which increase the intrauterine growth retardation risk. Methods. With the analysis of perinatal information system in R Slovenia, which includes all births in Slovenia during the years 1987, 1988 and 1989, the risk factors for intrauterine growth retardation have been ascertained. In total 54.052 monofetal birth were treated. With the help of growth curve of Slovenian newborn population, the newborns with body weight under tenth percentile of this population were chosen. The data were first analysed by unvariate method of hi- square and then the variables and categories where the result of unvariate analysis was significant at leas at p 0,25 and which might be the risk factors, were analysed with multivariate method of logistic linear regression. Results are shown as the odds ration and their 95 percent confidence interval. Results. 3.640 newborns were defined as small-for-date infants, i. e. 6,7 percent of the entire studied newborn population. The percentage of small-for-date infants differed a great deal regarding the maternity hospitals, and was highest in maternity hospitals of Ptuj and Murska Sobota, which could be the consequence of less developed areas in this region. The results of the study show, that the most important risk factors for the onset of intrauterine growth retardation are specially alcoholism in mothers, mother's body weight before pregnancy less than 50 kg, height less than 155 cm, and during pregnancy smoking, preeclampsia, suspect of established fetus abnormality before delivery, oligohydramnios, edemas and /or proteinuria, social problems, unmarried status and an uncomplete school education.(trunc.)
