Abstract     Counselling by the telephone crisis line is a dialogue between a professionally trained adviser and a caller in mental distress. Telephone crisis line POT (a telephone crisis line on the coastal part of Slovenia) is regarded - as other telephone crisis lines - as a preventive activity on the domain of mental health protection. With bilingual counselling - a unique case in Europe - it surpasses the state borders. Regarding the kinds of preventive activity, the callers are roughly divided into individuals without psychiatric-psychologic background and into clients or patients already partaking in mentioned professional help. In the first ones the primary prevention by telephone prevents the transition of milder distresses into more complicated mental troubles. In the other kind of callers, the secondary prevention reduces the possibility of a more severe recidivation. To both kinds of callers an intimate conversation and a help is offered in the most crucial hours, in their own language. After the calming down of the acute distress, the callers are - if necessary - reffered to adequate professional services. The analysis of the first 310 calls showed that the conversations by telephone crisis line POT do not differ essentially according to basic characteristics - with the exception of bilingual counselling - from similar services in Slovenia and throughtout the world.
