Abstract		Renewed occurence of diphtheria in some European countries has shown that the disease has not been eliminated in Europe yet, and it still represents a serious health problem. Because of the transmission risk of Corynebacterium diphtheriae into our country it is necessary to be acquainted with the recommendation of WHO Regional Office for Europe. The recommendation, dealing with the control and prevention of diphtheria, includes: attainment of large extent of vaccination in target population, prompt identification and treatment of the diseased, alert epidemiologic investigation of contacts and taking steps for the prevention of secondary cases of the disease. A project for the evaluation of population at risk and for the adequate protection against diphtheria has been launched in Slovenia to establish the presence of toxigenic and non-toxigenic strains of Corynebacterium diphtheriae and the immunity state and duration after the vaccination against diphtheria. An eventual change in vaccination strategy, especially in vaccination strategy of adults, will be proposed regarding the investigation results.
