Abstract     Epidemiologic characteristics of protection against rabies of Rijeka inhabitants during the period of 1986-1993 are presented. Protection against rabies is performed at the Unit for rabies prevention of the Institute for public health of the county Primorje-Gorski Kotar in Rijeka (number of inhabitants 339.885). During this period 2.440 persons were examined altogether. Vaccinated against rabies were 210 persons resp. 8,6 percent of the examined. From the total number of treated persons there were 74,3 percent of men and 25,7 percent of women, mostly within the age of 20-40 years. Most injuries occur in May and June and the majority of treated persons in November. Injuries were caused by domestic animals in 2.314 cases (mostly by dogs and cats) and by wild animals in 126 cases (mostly by foxes, stags and roes).
