Abstract     Hospital infections have been known for at least 30 years and they appeared from time to time also in Slovenia. Until the year 1984 there was no systematic education in this field. In that time medical Faculty of the University of ljubljana started a one semestre postgraduate education in hospital hygiene, because there seemed to be need for control nurses and physicians. In the last eleven years (1984-1995) 245 persons were educated in hospital hygiene and infection control, mostly nurses, but also sanitary and laboratory technicians. This postgraduate education was attended by 78 physicians of different specialisations: surgeons, doctors in medicine, intensive care, anaesthesiology, infectious diseases, epidemiologists, microbiologists, pediatricians, obstetricians and others. Most of the medical professionals that changed their point of view on the problem of infections because of this training, created or took part in infection control committees and in prevention of hospital infection and tried to educate the rest of the staff in the field of hospital hygiene. We assume that the education in hospital hygiene was fruitful and in favour of the quality of care of patients. The educated medical staff is a focus for spreading knowledge in infection control in their surroundings which contributes to the unification of the doctrine in Slovenia. Our experience will help us to improve the program and to adjust it to the level of the recent level of knowledge in our country.
