Abstract     Starost in staranje sta naravna življenjska procesa. Starostne spremembe so neizogibne in bolj ali manj prizadenejo posameznika, pojavlja se upad funkcij na različnih področjih življenja in prav tako različne bolezni. Bolezen možganov - demenca - vpliva na upad telesnih, psihofizičnih in kognitivnih sposobnosti, kar starostnika potisne v zmanjšanje samostojnosti, odvisnost in v zmanjšanje socialne vključenosti. Na kvalitetno staranje in na spremembe v starosti lahko vplivamo, med drugim tudi s telesno aktivnostjo, ki dobro vpliva na telesne, funkcionalne, duševne, kognitivne in socialne sposobnosti. Ohranjanje telesnih sposobnosti in spretnosti pripomore k ohranjanju samostojnosti in opravljanju vsakodnevnih opravil in aktivnosti. Dobro poznavanje starostnika vodi v dobro pripravljeno telesno vadbo, ki mora biti prilagojena njegovim sposobnostim in zdravstvenemu stanju. Redna telesna aktivnost krepi skeletno-mišični sistem, blaži upadanje psihofizičnih in funkcionalnih sposobnosti, pripomore k izboljšanju kognitivnih sposobnosti (pozornost, spomin, računanje, izražanje, orientacija). Za osebo z demenco in njegove najbližje je izrednega pomena, da telesna aktivnost dobro vpliva na samopodobo, zadovoljstvo, sprostitev, socializacijo, dobro počutje in kvaliteto življenja.Old-age and aging are natural processes of life. Old-age changes are inevitable and are affecting, more or less significantly, every individual, as a decline in functions in different areas of life and also with the occurrence of different diseases such as dementia. Dementia affects physical, psychophysical and cognitive abilities and places the elderly into a situation of reduced autonomy, of dependence which also affects social inclusion. Quality aging can be supported and changes in old-age can be influenced, for example by physical activity, which has a good effect on physical, functional, mental, cognitive and social abilities. Preserving physical abilities and skills helps to maintain autonomy and carry out daily tasks and activities. Good knowledge of the elderly leads to a well-prepared physical exercise, which must be adapted to his abilities and health. Regular physical activity strengthens the skeletal muscular system, alleviates the decline in psychophysical and functional abilities, helps to improve cognitive abilities (attention, memory, counting, expression, orientation). For a person with dementia and his closest one, it is of utmost importance that physical activity has a good effect on self-image, satisfaction, relaxation, socialization, well-being and quality of life.
