Abstract     The research was based on the analysis of the only Slovenian register of the blind, which is kept by the Association of the Blind and Weak Sighted in Slovenia on the national level. The register compromises 2297 pages of records revised in 1974 for the last time. According to the most frequent causes of blindness as well as to the number of the blind per unit of population and to the age structure of the blind, the results of this research place Slovenia among the developed countries. The prevalence rate of the blind in Slovenia is 115 per 100000 inhabitants. More than 43 percent of the blind are older than 65 years and in the last twenty years the portion of the blind due to macular degeneration in the old age is increasing which is linked to the longer lifespan. The portion of the blind owing to the diabetic retinopathy is also increasing for the same reason.
