Abstract     Bacteriological examinations of the population of dairy cows in the region Tolminsko (2522 cows) during the last five-years period (1989-93) have been analysed. The most frequent causing agent was S. aureus (64.15%), other streptococci caused mastitis in 23.14 precent and S. agalactiae in 10.38% of all cases of mastitis. Califorms were found in 2.32%. Examinations of subclinical mastitis in 367 cows, pastured during the summer in the mountains in the region Tolminsko, were carried out. It was found that with cows held on mountain pasture typ of breeding (stable - breeding during the winter, pasturing during the summer) and the age influenced the frequency of subclinical mastitis and the disorders in milk secretion. In summer, while cows pastured in the mountains, the number of subclinical mastitis cases increased as compared to the winter period (P less th. 0,01). Also disorders in milk secretion increased in the summer period (P less th. 0,01). In young cows the incidence of subclinical mastitis was lower than in the old ones (P less th. 0,05). The average number of somatic cells in the milk of older cows was also higher than in the milk of young ones (P less th. 0,005). This in mostly influenced by the wider spread of subclinical mastitis and disorders in milk secretion in older cows. In investigating acute mastitis in the region Tolminsko 42 cases in the year 1993 were analysed. The majority of cases was established to be at the beginning of lactation (28,54% of all cases), when the daily milk - quantity was also the highest. The frequency of the causing agents of acute mastitis in the region Tolminsko was, in comparison to previous examinations, somewhat specific. S. agalactiae caused more and coliforms less cases. The results of treatment of acute mastitis were comparable to the results mentioned in literature. The sensitivity to antibiotics of S. (Abstract truncated)
