Abstract		The article deals with two important theories which, each in its own way, shed light on the way adolescents resolve their primary developmental objective - that of forming their identity or creating their self-image. The introduction attempts to answer the question whether the use of two different terms by researchers, i.e. identity and self-image, proves that there are two different, although mutually connected, developmental tasks, or, whether they all refer to one and the same phenomenon. There follows a review of significant research findings by the American psychologist J. Marcie. The article then touches on some central topics. It concludes by presenting some critical observations concerning the theories considered, which, when united, would allow for the exact research of the adolescent's self-image.
