Abstract     The relative importance of various clinical methods in heart function determination is briefly described. On the basis of some negative data (normal physical activity, normal ccg), likelihood of clinically important heart failure can be excluded. Detailed insight in heart anatomy and function can be obtained only by echocardiography. In heart failure patient the basic pathology of the heart has to be determined and also immediate cause of deterioration (c.g. arrhythmias, embolism, inadequate antihypertensive therapy) must be identified.
