Abstract     Androgen binding proteins were found in the plasma membrane prepared from protoplasts of the filamentous fungus Cochliobolus lunatus. The binding was studied by competitive binding assay using (3H) labeled and nonlabeled androgens. The mean Kd determined for testosterone binding protein (TBP) by Scatchard analysis was 11.1. nM and the binding capacity Bmax ranged from 34 to 56 fmol/mg protein; for 4-androstene-3,17-dione (androstenedione) binding protein (ABP) the Kd was 7.4 nM and Bmax ranged from 20 to 59 fmol/mg protein. The steroid binding specificity for TBP and ABP was studied with different competitors. Data for binding specificity of fungal and mammalian androgen binding proteins were compared and a characteristic low specificity for androgen binding proteins of C. lunatus was observed.
