Abstract		Facial palsy can have extensive consequences for the patient mainly due to facial disfigurement and functional impairment, which can both, in turn, affect psychical health. The treatment of facial palsy depends greatly on the underlying cause; when we confirm that the palsy is final and we cannot expect improvement of the nerve function, we subsequently turn to plastic and reconstructive surgery for facial reanimation techniques. The choice of procedures and techniques depends on the duration of facial palsy, which can be divided into three periods: acute, intermediate and chronic. Depending on this data, we decide which reconstructive procedure is the most suitable for our patient and which can offer the best possible result. The techniques are described in detail in this article. Between the years 2008 and 2017 we surgically treated 66 patients with facial palsy who un - derwent the described procedures at KOPREKO of the University Medical Centre Ljubljana . Our statistic is also included in this article. Besides the correct choice and performance of the surgical technique, it is of utmost importance that facial palsy is recognised early and referred to a specialised centre that can provide an individual and integrated treatment.
