Abstract     General health situation in Ljubljana greatly improved after the earthquake (1895). However, it doesnt mean that the citizens of Ljubljana had bad or insufficient health service in the period before the earthquake (1881-1895). On the contrary, in that time medical workers in the small town of Ljubljana, situated in the small county of Carniola tried to achieve and even surpass rather high standards of central European health service which have been already achieved by almost all seventeen Austrian provinces. Citizens, county officals and nobility have recognized the importance of investing in medical personnel and equipment, as well as, medical institutions - mainly in hospitals and public health centers. The contemporary medical legislation in Austria and county of Carniola was favorable to their endevor. In this article I tried to present their efforts, success and failures.
