Abstract     Even before the earthquake the number of inhabitants grew so high that the infrastructure became insufficient to assure normal life. The town was sinking in litter and sewage, the outbursts of epidemics were quite often. Very poor standard of housing of lower class was the frequent cause of disease. Every fifth death case was due to tuberculosis. For about 50 years the representatives of revival movement were teaching health prevention, personal hygiene, hygiene of lodgings and general hygiene in settlements. However, the money was scarce and the strong hand was missing. The mayor of Ljubljana knew how to use the earthquake to awaken the citizens, so that they enthusiastically changed the old mentality and brought nonhygienic dumps, open sewage and sludge to an end. In the city they built a new sewage system and installed electricity, gas and water-lines in the houses. New lights illuminated the streets. Thus, Ljubljana could flourish further and develop into a modern city.
