Abstract     In 1883 the County Council of Carniola discussed the building of a new hospital in Ljubljana for the first time. The population in Ljubljana and its surroundings grew dramatically, therefore the county hospital in Ajdovščina experienced a serious bed shortage. After many discussions the necessary money was raised and building of a new hospital started in 1883. At the initial plan the hospital should be built in the form of a pavilion with six individual departments and 400 beds. The works should be terminated in September 1894, however the building was delayed. In April 1895 Ljubljana suffered from an earthquake which caused a lot of destruction. The hospital in Ajdovščina was also damaged and patients were evacuated to temporary sheds and tents raised at the hospital garden. This event urged faster building of the new hospital, which was finally opened in 1895. In the second and third part of the twentieth century new departments were opened. The opening of Medical Faculty contributed a great deal to the enrichment of medical practice and in 1945 laid firm basis to the development of clinical hospital, as well as, today,s Clinical Center in Ljubljana.
