Abstract     In the last century and to the end of the first world war (1918) Ljubljana had mainly temporary foreign (German speaking) dentists. During the years 1870-1904 four specialists for oral and gum disease: dr. Anton Paischel, dr. Avgust Schweiger, dr. Edvard Bretl and dr. Alojzij Praunseis settled in Ljubljana and opened their dental practices. They offered employment to many young dentists and dental assistants. Dental practice at that time was badly organized, dental hygiene in general was law, dental service was poor, lacking in personnel and equipment. Therefore dentist could provide only some basic care and a result caries was widely spread, mostly among preschool and school children.
