Abstract     The Red Cross is one of the oldest humanitarian organizations in Slovenia. It offered a considerable care for wounded people during the earthquake in Ljubljana (1895). It was also very active in the public health services, social welfare and gathering informations on missing people tracing activities during the 1st and 2nd world war. After the war for the independence of Slovenia, in 1991 the Slovene Red Cross was taking care of several thousand foreigners who fled to Slovenia. It was taking care of the deserters from the Yugoslav Army, helping them to return to their homes. It has received over 100 000 tracing requests for missing people. The volunteers of the Red Cross strove for the enforcement of the international humanitarian law and they managed to present the war in Slovenia from its very beginning as an international armed conflict and not an internal affair. In the time of earthquakes in Slovenia and in other countries the Slovenia Red Cross has cooperated with the International Federation, providing health services and social care for the affected population. At present the Red Cross is very well organized, having highly experienced staff and as such it could offer together with other health organizations and state health institutions on expert first aid to the population in need provide social welfare and carry aout tracing activities.
