Abstract     At the time of the earthquake in Ljubljana in 1895, there were 96 fire brigades in the whole area affected by the earthquake. These were poorly equipped and only few brigades had laders that could reach the height of l5m. Reports on the earthquake that were published in the newspapers Slovenski narod (The Slovene Nation) and Slovenec (The Slovene) came from Ljubljana and also from other places throughout Slovenia. The archives and chronicles of fire brigades that were active on the area of the earthquake expect for Ljubljana, do not mention the involvement of firemen in the rescuing operations and thereafter. In many villages the earthquake damaged the churches, churc towers, priest's houses and mansions, these buldings however; have not caught fire. In Ljubljana, the firemen gathered in their workshop soon after the first earthquake shocks and started rescuing people, removed half-torn chimneys and bricks that could be falling on the streets. During the following weeks they organized a continous fire watch, distributed the food that arrived at Ljubljana railway station and maintained order during its distribution to the people. For their unselfish work, that went on form the 14th of April to 8th of July, they received numerous recognitons and material and financial help that was used to cover the expenses and distribution among the members of the fire brigade.
