Abstract     Earthquake is not a very common theme in literature. However, there are some earthquakes that had a great impact on economic and social developments, as well as, on the literature of a certain area and time. The Ljubljana earthquake in 1895 was certainly one of them. The most outstanding writer of that period was Josip Stritar who described the emergency immediately after the earthquake in 1895. He wrote some effective solidarity songs, among which the eight strophe elegy - "Ljubljanska Lizbona" (Lisbon in Ljubljana), had a great success. In an extremely short period of time it was published in Ljubljana, Prague and Zagreb and thus spread the news on a sad fate of our capital to our neighbors and men of letters. Without regards to the literary value, his songs have a humane mission and represent an excellent and unique social, as well as, historical document.
