Abstract | Sudden massive bleeding into the gastrointestinal tract is often lifethreatening and even fatal. The origin of bleeding can be from the upper gastrointestinal tract and from the lower one respectively. The line of demarcation is the duodenojejunal flexure. Bloody vomiting and/or passage of blood by stool are symptoms urging immediate diagnostic and therapeutic measures. In cases of extremely massive bleeding the measures of resuscitation have absolute priority. Endoscopic treatment of variceal and ulcer bleeding with either permanent or temporary success deserves special credit for diminishing the mortality rate of this patients. | |
