Abstract     Patients with acute hemorrhage must be transported as quickly as possible to a suitable hospital with facilities for rapid diagnostic evaluation and appropriate treatment. The measures include the restoration of hemodynamic stability, blood loss replacement, gastric lavage and endoscopy. The majority of patients require admission to an intensive care unit. When because of excessive bleeding the site of hemorrhage connot be located endoscopically, angiography may be applied for diagnostic as well as therapeutic purposes. In cases where the bleeding connot be controlled by nonoperative and endoscopic procedures, the decision for operative treatment must be reached in due time.
