Abstract		Acute haemorrhage from the colon and rectum is discussed. A tentative plan of diagnostic and therapeutic measures is presented. Diseases and states associated with bleeding are listed. The frequency of bleeding and the indications for operative therapy are presented for each condition. As a rule, surgery is undertaken only after the cause and site of bleeding have been identified, and when the haemorrhage does not stop spontaneously or respond to nonsurgical treatment. Diagnostic investigations are often performed concurrently with therapeutic measures.
