Abstract		The pericardium may be affected as an isolated process or as part of a systemic disease. In deve - loped countries (with a low prevalence of tuberculosis), the most common aetiologies are presu- med to be viral, immune-mediated forms (systemic inflammatory diseases, post-cardiac injury syndromes) and cancer. In clinical practice, there are few general presentations with distinctive signs and symptoms that are referred to as pericardial syndromes: pericarditis, isolated pericar - dial effusion, cardiac tamponade, constrictive pericarditis and pericardial masses and cysts. In the latest European Society of Cardiology guidelines for pericardial disease new diagnostic stra- tegies have been proposed for the triage of patients with pericarditis and pericardial effusion, and specific diagnostic criteria have been established for acute and recurrent pericarditis. More - over, new therapeutic strategies have emerged. The article covers a translation of ESC Guidelines on the Diagnosis and Management of Pericardial Diseases adapted to our situation.
