Abstract     Insertion of plastic cannula within a peripheral vein is a safe and simple procedure which can be completed in a short time, so it is very often used in emergency cases. Such a line will provide an access for administration of intravenous fluids or transfusions, repeated administration of drugs and repeated specimen collection (blood samples). Advantages of using intravenous line are better physical comfort of the patient and a fast effect of the drug that was given. We insert intravenous cannula to critically ill patients (in cases of dehydration, shock, metabolic or electrolyte disbalances, dysrhytmias, poisoning, during cardiopulmonary resuscitation, etc.). The superficial veins of the upper limb are most commonly chosen for insertion of intravenous cannula. We prepare all the equipment (plastic cannulas for single use, sterile swabs, alcohol-based lotion for cleaning, sterile adhesive plaster or tape, sterile dressing pack, latex gloves, tourniquet, disposable waste bag, vacuumed specimen tubes, prepared injections or infusion with intravenous administration set, heparinized saline for flushing the cannula). We explain the procedure to the patient. Asepsis must be maintained throughout to prevent infection. Before starting the procedure we wash and dry our hands. We select an appropriate vein, put on gloves (preferably sterile) and clean the insertion site. Then we insert cannula at an angle of approximately 30 degree, aspirate blood, advance the plastic part into the vein and remove the stylet. We type the plastic part of cannula which stays in vein with sterile plaster or tape to prevent dislodgment. We withdraw the required amount of blood, administer drugs or connect the infusion at correct rate. If necessary, we apply a bandage. When used for intermittent therapy the cannula should be flushed with a solution of heparinized saline to provide patency and to prevent a cloth formation inside the cannula. (Truncated)
