Abstract     Multiple sclerosis is most probably developed as a consequence of interaction between infectious agent and a genetically susceptible host. Both cell mediated and humoral immunity contribute to the pathogenesis of this disease. A greater insight into the fundamental cause of multiple sclerosis has been provided by the recognition that certain immune response genes are associated with an increased susceptibility to the disease. Such knowledge should provide new opportunities for selective therapeutic interventions.
