Abstract     Despite widespread computerization of business systems, the document has remained by far the most common medium. It can be in different kinds of formats: text, image, video, sound or multimedia. Hospitals must handle large bodies of medical, administrative and technical records. Document collections are usually maintained separately from the conventional hospital information system, which includes only a part of the data contained in documents. Thanks to modern technology, all types of documents can now be digitalized and stored on electronic media. Therefore management of digitized documents must form an integral part of efficient hospital information system. Since hospital documents, especially medical records, contain confidential information, appropriate data protection is an important aspect of document management. When setting up a document management system the interdependence of all business functions in hospital must be taken into account. A staged implementation programme, based on a pilot approach and observing priority fields of work, is the most suitable. Compared to the classical methods of document storage, the new technology using optical devices is more economical in terms of space and insures greater security. Since digitized records are not legally acceptable according to our present legislation, parallel storage of data on paper of microform is still mandatory. It is expected, however, that in keeping with western trends, electronic documents will soon acquire legal validity also in this country.
