Abstract     The specifics of communication in hospitals are a mix of many aspects, of alphanumeric and picture type data, of local and remote servers, of security considerations, of privacy and data sharing. We discuss typical structures and the consequences thereof, especially in respect to reducing delays, to minimising mutual disturbance, to flexibility and to need of achieving long term usage. In future, multimedia will add a further demand: video communication. A short description of ATM, a future protocol that could meet this end, highlighting advantages and drawbacks, shows that planning must look well ahead if the network is not to be obsolete at an early date. Finally, a brief overview is given of the existing and coming networks for the Medical Faculty of Munich University.
