Abstract     The effectiveness of an information retrieval system is largely dependent upon the set of dictionaries available for use by the system. The dictionary with the greatest potential impact is undoubtedly the thesaurus. Multilingual thesauri follow a trend towards the international echange of information and needs of users to be able to work in their mother toungues. The United States Library of Medicine's MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) thesaurus has gained an unique international reputation in the field of medicine and has been translated to some other languages. This paper reviews the development of the bilingual English-Slovene thesaurus MeSH from its beginning 16 years ago when it was accepted for a Slovene literature analysis tool. Today new principles have been established for the translation and the construction of the thesaurus. It is organised as a computer database available through CD/ISIS software and accessible on the Institute for Biomedical Informatics local network. All the translated descriptors the full tree numbers were given for the location in the hierarchy. They would enable some new operations among them the inclusion Medical language System (UMLS) in the Metathesaurus of the Unified Medical Language System. Some new principles have been established considering international standards for the purpose of co-ordination of the existing translation and further systematic MeSH translation. All insitutes included in the Specialised Medical Information Centre participate in the construction of the Slovene MeSH thesaurus.
