Abstract		As early as six years ago, wa recognized the need for setting up a modern, computer-assisted information system. In collaboration with the LIST software producing firm we began to develop a programme, called HIPOKRAT-HEMATOLOGIJA (Hippocrates-Haematology). Our principal goals were to facilitate the Department's daily work and provide for an easier and faster retrieval of the available information. The programme covered all administrative data and the entire body of medical data collected in the Department's out-patient clinic and its haematological laboratory. Daily work of the administrative and nursing staff has been facilitated, and the data needed for patient treatment and research are now more easily accessible to the doctors. The use of the programme avoids unnecessary repetition of data, accelerates the inter-unit exchange of information and allows for a better comprehensive control of the Department's work. We set up register of all patients with haematologic diseases and disorders of the blood-forming organs, treated at the Department of Haematology. All those involved in the development of this programme have done their best to make it customer friendly, and to limit the data to be aquired to those that are essential to the Department's work. Throughout, at most attention has been paid to all aspects of data protection, and the basic programme has been duly updated. Our next task will be to integrate the programme in the University Medical Centre patient care information system, and through it into the network of other systems outside the Centre.
